Common Eye Diseases & Conditions

Routine eye care is an essential part of proactive health, not just for your eyes but also for your overall well-being. We’re here to help answer all your eye health questions because we’re passionate about being your go-to resource.

Our eye doctor and team have extensive experience in managing various eye problems. With in-depth knowledge of eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, keratoconus, and dry eye disease, we can help manage common eye conditions to keep your eyes healthy and your vision clear.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. High blood sugar levels can damage these blood vessels, leading to vision problems and even blindness.

Regular diabetic eye exams help with early detection and management of this condition.

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the eye to the brain. This damage often occurs due to increased pressure in the eye. If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to irreversible vision loss.

Early detection and treatment are essential to preserve vision.

Macular degeneration is a common eye condition that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. As the macula deteriorates, it becomes harder to see fine details, read, and recognize faces.

There are 2 main types of macular degeneration: dry and wet.

  • The dry form usually progresses slowly without noticeable symptoms.
  • The wet form can appear quickly but can be managed with medicated injections or surgery.

Regular eye exams are crucial for monitoring macular health and detecting issues early.

A cataract forms on the eye’s natural lens and can cause cloudy or blurry vision, sensitivity to light, and difficulty seeing at night. Cataracts develop gradually and are often associated with aging.

Early changes can be managed with glasses or contact lenses. As vision worsens, surgery to replace the cloudy lens with an artificial one can significantly improve vision.

Dry eye (dry eye disease) occurs when the eyes produce too few or poor-quality tears. Your eyes need consistent moisture and nourishment for protection, comfort, and clear vision. You can experience dryness, irritation, redness, and blurred vision without enough quality tears.

Various factors, including aging, certain medications, environmental conditions, and underlying medical conditions, can cause dry eye.

We can help you find long-lasting relief with OptiLIGHT IPL and a personalized dry eye treatment approach.

Meibomian glands are tiny oil glands in the eyelids that produce an oily substance (meibum) that helps keep tears stable and long-lasting.

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) occurs when these glands become blocked or stop producing oil effectively, leading to dry eye symptoms and potentially more severe eye problems.

We can create a targeted dry eye treatment plan that helps soothe inflammation, unclog blockages, and improve gland function.

Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition that causes a gradual thinning of the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. This thinning can lead to a cone-like bulge in the cornea, distorting vision.

Symptoms of keratoconus include blurred vision, sensitivity to light, and frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions.

Scleral contact lenses can improve vision, while corneal cross-linking or implants offer effective management and vision improvement for the condition.

Diagnostic Technology

Detecting eye issues early and managing them effectively is crucial for maintaining healthy vision. Our diagnostic technology helps us capture detailed information about your health.

During your exam, we use technologies like RETeval, optical coherence tomography, and visual field testing to thoroughly assess your eye health and identify any potential problems.

If we detect any concerns, your eye doctor at Reid Eye Care can create a personalized plan to help preserve your vision.

RETeval

RETeval is an innovative device that helps us assess retina health (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye) and optic nerve (which sends visual messages to the brain).

By measuring the electrical response of your retina to light, we can detect early signs of conditions like diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and glaucoma.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive imaging test that captures detailed cross-sectional images of the retina.

OCT creates a 3D map of the eye’s interior, providing valuable information to diagnose and monitor conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.

Your visual field is everything you can see without moving your eyes or head, including straight ahead (central vision) and the “corners” of your eyes (peripheral vision).

A visual field test measures peripheral vision. By identifying areas of vision loss or “blind spots,” we can detect early signs of glaucoma and other eye conditions that may affect peripheral vision.
